The Top 40 UK Singles for – October 4, 2009

1. Break Your Heart – Taio Cruz

Taio Cruz still dominates the top of the charts for another week with “Break Your Heart.” I’m still not a fan of this song, honestly, but at least Cruz is upfront to the ladies saying, “I’m a heart breaker.” After listening to this song again, the music is really catchy and upbeat, especially with the variety of mixes incorporating the techno and electronica beats.

2. Empire State of Mind – Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys

Jay-Z climbs the charts one spot this week with “Empire State of Mind.” This is very classic Jay-Z because he raps about representing New York and everything that goes along with “being ghetto.” He expresses that New York is the best place to be. Alicia Keys’ background vocals enhance Jay-Z’s rapping and gives the song a R&B feel. Two thumbs up for Jay.

3. Sexy Chick – David Guetta featuring Akon

“Sexy Chick”  fell one spot this week, but still remains strong on the charts. I still don’t understand what is so appealing about this song, except for the music. Akon’s calling a woman a “sexy chick” (in this version) is too generalizing of women to me. That’s just the feminist in me. Guetta and Akon must be doing something right.

4. She Wolf – Shakira

Shakira stays in the fourth spot this week with “She Wolf.” This is the latest song from her long awaited new album. The sound is different from Shakira’s folk-sounding past. This song has more of an electronic, club music feel to it. It’s one of my favorite songs right now. Every woman has to let her “she wolf out so it can breathe.”

5. I Gotta a Feeling – Black Eyed Peas

“I Gotta Feeling” rises one spot this week to number five. The Black Eyed Peas do it again with another hit, much like “Boom Boom Pow.” The song reverberates a good feeling (hence the title) going out on the town with friends and having the best time. It’s a feel good song, enough said.

6.Run This Town – Jay-Z featuring Rihanna and Kanye West

Jay’s second song on the charts drops from number 5 to 6 this week. The song is still going strong all around the world. Jay still proclaims that he’s number one and he’ll remain on top forever, like he always does. Rihanna and West’s vocals give a good contrast to Jay’s rapping. The background music resembles an African tribal music feel much like many of West’s latest songs.

7. Sweet Disposition – Temper Trap

“Sweet Disposition” rises five places to number 7. The slow, airy voice of Temper Trap is a sharp contrast to the rap and other hip-hop sounding songs in the top 10. The quick baseline keeps the tempo up in this song. “Sweet Disposition” has an outer space sound that may reflect indie is the next big thing in the UK.

8. Boys & Girls – Pixie Lott

Pixie Lott’s song drops one place this week to number 8. This song is still one of my favorites on the countdown. It’s so much fun and upbeat. When I hear the first beats of the song I want to get up and dance, even in my living room. I hope to see this song having a long lifespan on the UK top charts.

9. Hotel Room Service – Pitbull

Pitbull does it again with another huge hit. “Hotel Room Service” rose from 21 to 9 this week on the charts. He sings/raps about really attractive women, money, cars and everything else that comes with being a high roller. Pitbull, as long as you keep pumping out the high energy music, your songs will keep rising.

10. Dirtee Cash – Dizzee Rascal

Dizzee’s latest climbs up on spot to number 10. The song is all about the importance of money and how “everyone wants to be famous.” What will people give to be famous and have the “dirtee cash?”

11. Left My Heart in Tokyo – Mini Viva

“Left My Heart in Tokyo” drops one place to number 11. Mini Viva has really strong vocals compared to a typical techno influenced song. The lyrics are mediocre, but the music makes up for what the lyrics lack.

12. Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff – Deadmau5 featuring Rob Swire

Deadmau5 shot up the charts this week from number 58 to 12 with “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff.” It must be really popular among the techno crowd. Still not a fan of this track.

13. Holiday – Dizzee Rascall

“Holiday” dropped from 9 to 13 this week. It’s reminiscent of the summertime going off on holiday/vacation and partying. Because the seasons are changing, that could impact how long this song has on the charts. The music is all right, but Dizzee’s lyrics make one long for a tropical island and a cold drink. Let’s go, Dizzee!

14. Celebration – Madonna

Madonna has evolved for almost 30 years in the music industry and has stayed on top for a long time. With this track, I think she’s trying too hard to fit in with a younger fan base. The techno beats are over the top. It still reminds me of an Old Greg skit.

15. New York – Paloma Faith

“New York” is another big riser on the charts going from 31 to 15 this week. Her soulful voice penetrates one’s being because of her sadness. Her man left her for another mistress – New York. You can’t help but feel sorry for Faith.

16. Sex on Fire – Kings of Leon

“Sex of Fire” still lingers on the charts after almost a year. It’s still at number 16. The Kings of Leon are doing something right because “Use Somebody” is doing really well on the charts, slowly rising to the top. People can’t seem to get enough of “Sex on Fire” or the Kings of Leon. I know I can’t.

17. 4ever – Veronicas

The Veronicas have the highest jump on the charts with “4ever.” It went from 158 to 17 this week. This song sounds like any other popish sound out right now. There is a harder guitar beat. The Veronicas are denoting pleasure and lust for a boy. “Come on baby, we ain’t gonna live forever, let me show you all the things we could do, you know you want to be with me tonight…” It’s a teenager anthem – let’s live in the moment because all we have is right now. The world won’t end if you don’t sleep with that one boy tonight, get over it Veronicas.

18. SOS (Let the Music Play) – Jordin Sparks

“SOS” went from number 39 to 18 this week. Again, this song sounds like everything else that is out at this time. Sparks sings about dancing and to let go of all the drama that’s going on. It’s a good dancing song, but it’ll probably be forgotten in a few years time.

19. Watch the Sun Come Up – Example

“Watch the Sun Come Up” rose one spot to number 19 this week. There is a huge lack of lyrics except for, “Good morning and watch the sun come up.” It’s very heavily techno influenced. I don’t like techno, but I really enjoy this song. It’s light and fluffy with some booty shaking on the side.

20. Get Sexy – Sugababes

“Get Sexy” dropped five places to number 20 this week. Ew, I still don’t like this song. It gets more annoying each time I hear it. If a guy called out and said, “Hey sexy!”, I’d give him a disgusted look and walk on. The lyrics are ripping on Right Said Fred’s “Too Sexy.” Learn to be more original Sugababes.

21. We are Golden – Mika

Mika dropped from number 13 to 21 this week with “We are Golden.” Mika continues his playful banter with this song. His falsetto is still one of the best in popular music right now.

22. Lovegame – Lady Gaga

Gaga does it again with “Lovegame.” The song dropped from 19 to 22. This is my favorite song from her. It’s dancing good with a great beat. She talks about how people should be either in or out when it comes to a love game. The song itself is pretty generic, but it’s Lady Gaga. You can’t out do her. Come on people, let’s ride the disco stick… or as long as it stays on the charts.

23. Ignorance – Paramore

“Ignorance” rose four plays from 27 to 23 this week. This song has a rougher sound to it. I think Paramore is trying to be classified as hard rock, but I don’t think they cut it. They’re no Alice in Chains or Black Sabbath. They first made it big because of the Twilight Series… maybe they should stick with what they know.

24. Remedy – Little Boots

Little Boots dropped ten places this week down to 24. This song is very poppy and is heavily influenced by techno beats as the song goes on. She sings about, as many songs do, love. She needs a remedy to get “rid of the poisons of my emotions.” Eh, not really a fan, but the beat works.

25. Sweet Dreams – Beyonce

“Sweet Dreams” drops three places this week to 25. Beyonce has been dominating the charts since her Destiny Child’s days. There’s nothing extraordinary about this song, but because it’s Beyonce, it’s bound to keep going up the charts.

26. Uprising – Muse

Muse dropped from number 18 to 26 this week on the charts. “Uprising” is a very dark song revolting against “the Man.” It seems like this song will be picked up by a movie or TV show with vampires in them. It has that sound to it… dark and haunting.

27. I’m Not Your Toy – La Roux

“I’m Not Your Toy” jumps from 55 to 27 this week. The song is really light and bouncy in concerns of the sound. It’s very electronic. It reminds me a lot of Vampire Weekend. La Roux’s lyrics are addressing how she’s not a man’s toy. She’s better than that and her story is “more than girl meets boy.” Roar for the feminist movement, La Roux.

28. Fire Burning – Sean Kingston

“Fire Burning” drops five places this week to 28. It’s Sean Kingston and he’s singing yet again about another woman who’s hot “like the fire.” The lyrics are horrid, but this song is very addictive. It’s got a great beat and danceability to it. As long as Kingston keeps pumping out hits like this, he’ll do well.

29. Every Morning – Basshunter

Another cheesy love song that hooks any female. “Every Morning” drops from 17 to 29 this week. With lyrics like Basshunter, what girl couldn’t resist called “more beautiful than any girl could be?” Cheesy, but I love it!

30. Get Shaky – Ian Carey Project

“Get Shaky” drops four places this week to number 30. This is a good song with high energy. A minute into the song the techno beats start showing it’s intended to be a dance song for the club. Two thumbs up here. We all should “get a little crazy and break the rules.”

31. Never Leave You – Tinchy Stryder featuring Amelie

“Never Leave You” drops down to 31 this week. It’s another cheesy rapper wannabe talking about his pledges to be true to his woman. Not really into this song because of the mediocre lyrics and ridiculous rapping.

32. You’re Not Alone – Tinchy Stryder

This song is huge this week. It went from number 113 to 32 this week. Within the first few seconds of the song, the techno beats are dominant and get stronger through the song. I still think it’s a really cheesy song both with the music and lyrics. He’s popular among the techno crowd.

33. Fame – Naturi Naughton

“Fame” jumps up ten spots this week on the countdown. This song is from the new remake of “Fame.” The beat is really upbeat with plenty of mixers to enhance the sound. It’s not the original, but does well as a modern remake.

34. Supernova – Mr. Hudson featuring Kanye West

“Supernova” drops from 29 to 34 this week. Mr. Hudson uses electronic and techno mixes to enhance the song. Kanye does well with his vocals helping to aid Hudson’s voice.

35. You Belong With Me – Taylor Swift

Swift’s video drops five places this week. Even though this song is country-pop, it’s been doing well worldwide. I really love this song because it’s Taylor Swift. This song is spewing innocence and sweetness. What person hasn’t wanted to scream at someone else that they should belong with them? It’s happened to me. You go, Taylor!

36. Use Somebody – Kings of Leon

“Use Somebody” has dropped from 25 to 36 this week. It’s another monster hit for the Kings of Leon. I’m surprised it hasn’t surpassed “Your Sex is on Fire” yet. This is a simple rock song musically, but the lyrics are very strong. We all could use somebody to make our lives a little bit better each day.

37. Outta Here – Esmee Denters

”Outta Here” drops nine spots this week. The music is pretty generic for this song, but the lyrics are strong. Esmee Denters sings out the betrayal of an exasperated love. She’s taking on the pain of heartbreak for all of woman kind. Roar, Esmee!

38. Beat Again – JLS

JLS dropped down five spots this week. JLS, you are the apitamy of cheesy. The boy bands have always had a great track record in the UK, but this one is either ten years too late or trying to ride the wave of the Jonas Brothers. Even though they are the stereotype of the boy band, their harmonizing is very good. JLS, you’re not a doctor, so spare yourself the humiliation from begging for the girl.

39. What About Now – Daughtry

This song entered the charts at 39 this week. Daughtry has another rock ballad, but this one is inspiring. They are talking about making a change today and now in our world, no matter where we are. It’s not one of my favorite songs, but I think it’s very admirable they made this song.

40. Young Forever – Jay-Z featuring Mr. Hudson

It’s Jay’s third song on the countdown, impressive by any means. It’s a remake of Rod Stewart’s classic. Jay adds his own favorable rap. He tried, but I’m over it.
