So, remember This post about skinny models, photoshop and normal people? Well, it looks like the 5′10, 120 pound model who was photoshopped in that Ralph Lauren ad to extreme thinness was fired for being “too fat” and not being able to fit into the sample size.
Here is Filippa Hamilton.

Here is a video from the Today Show about this incident.
Filippa’s BMI is 18.2. That is considered underweight.
It just makes me sad that there is so many unhealthy attitudes towards weight in the fashion industry and in this country. A BMI of 18.2 is considered fat, but that is much thinner than the average woman. I think what this company photoshopped Fillipa into shows their ideal of a woman, and I don’t think anyone should strive for that ideal. I think healthy is sexy, personally.
According to the National Institute for Mental Health, an estimated 0.5 percent to 3.7 percent of females suffer from anorexia, and an estimated 1.1 percent to 4.2 percent suffer from bulimia. I don’t think the knowledge that a major retailer fired an underweight model for being “too fat” will help anyone who might be struggling with or developing an eating disorder.
I love fashion. Putting on a new outfit that flatters me makes me feel good about myself, and I like to watch runway shows and see the wearable art that designers have created. But if this is an industry where 5′10 and 120 is too fat, I don’t want to participate in that.
